Anaemia in India: reading NFHS-5 responsibly

Why survey evidence matters—and what it does not prove.

Anaemia in India: reading NFHS-5 responsibly

Read the survey in context

NFHS-5 is India’s National Family Health Survey for 2019–21. Its findings provide population-level evidence about health and nutrition, including anaemia in surveyed groups. The survey period should always accompany a reference to its findings.

Anaemia is not a single-cause condition

Anaemia can have different causes. Population survey findings do not diagnose an individual, and they should not be treated as proof that one food product will resolve the problem.

Where food fortification fits

Food fortification is part of a broader nutrition conversation alongside dietary diversity and appropriate health interventions. Buyers should distinguish the intended role of a programme from claims about a specific product.

Use evidence carefully

When writing a procurement note or programme proposal, cite the original survey, define the population group and avoid presenting historical figures as a current measurement.
