Fortified food, fortified rice and FRK: what’s the difference?

Start with the three terms

Fortified food is food to which selected micronutrients have been added. Fortified rice is the finished staple. Fortified rice kernels, usually shortened to FRK, are the concentrated rice-shaped ingredient used in one approach to producing that staple.

Why the distinction matters to a buyer

An enquiry for FRK is an ingredient procurement request. An enquiry for fortified rice includes the final blending application. Specify which product you need before comparing quotations.

For FRK, the nutrient formulation and declared blending ratio must be considered together. A kernel intended for one ratio should not be substituted at another without a technical assessment.

A useful procurement brief

State the end use, rice variety, required standard, monthly volume, packaging and delivery location. Ask for the product specification and evidence relevant to the actual batch being supplied.
